The smart fortwo cdi has been awarded a special accolade for its exceptional performance in consumption and environmental friendliness.
Italian automobile magazine, Quattroroute, singled the car out for a special award in tribute to its environment-friendly innovations.
"The smart fortwo cdi was the first car in the world to realise an average fuel economy of 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres over a total drive of 1,000 kilometres," the magazine read.
"This is an excellent result, which meets the highest demands concerning environmental aspects and energy conservation - combined in a car which is affordable by everyone," the article added.
A direct-injection diesel engine gives the smart fortwo cdi the power it needs as well as providing exceptional fuel efficiency.
Along with the special award from Quattroroute, the model has also been awarded the OkoGlobe - an environmental certificate from the Oko-Trend institute.
Models from the smart range were also employed at the Live Earth concert in July 2007 to transport musicians such as Madonna and Sting to their concerts as they brought climate change to the world’s attention.
