Production of the second generation of the smart fortwo electric drive has begun at the manufacturer’s planet in France.
No compromises have been made in relation to the amount of space offered by the vehicle or its focus on safety compared to the launch vehicle in the range.
However, it is fitted with an innovative and efficient lithium-ion battery positioned between the axles and will be available to buy from 2012.
Marc Langenbrinck, Managing Director of the smart brand and the Head of Sales and Marketing at smart, said: "smart is once again taking on a pioneering role and redefining zero-emission urban mobility.
"We are the first manufacturer in Europe to launch a series-produced electric vehicle in eight countries at once. Daimler is spearheading electromobility with the smart fortwo electric drive."
He added that the vehicle is the next step in the "evolution of the brand", which provides vehicles that are small enough to park perpendicular to the flow of traffic.
Other features of the iconic two-seater vehicles are that they have the lowest fleet fuel consumption across all manufacturers and a distinctive, fresh design.
