Mercedes-Benz and smart are leading other manufacturers in terms of the production of electric vehicles as they have created models that are fit for the road rather than just motor shows.
According to Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars, the possibilities are strong for electric mobility in the future.
Mercedes-Benz has already taken steps with the B-Class F-CELL, with European and US customers taking delivery of the first 200 models next year.
Meanwhile, the second generation of the smart fortwo electric drive, featuring a lithium-ion battery, is currently under construction, with volume production expected to begin in 2012.
Among the benefits of the electric cars are the low running costs they have, alongside an exemption from congestion charges in locations such as London.
Dr Schmidt said: "All things considered, we see good prospects for electric mobility with fuel cells and batteries.
"While other companies are still presenting electric show cars, we at smart and Mercedes-Benz are already bringing two vehicles that are fully suitable for everyday use to the roads."
Both vehicles can run for a decent number of miles before needing to be recharged, with city drivers profiting from the 84 miles able to be accomplished by the smart fortwo.
For those regularly travelling longer distances, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL has the ability to run for 250 miles.
