A vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a model from the smart range have been recognised in independent research from environmental institute Oko-Trend.
The experts looked at areas including fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, noise and materials chosen for construction before making their assessments.
It was decided that the Mercedes-Benz S 400 HYBRID and the smart mhd were each the most eco-friendly vehicles in the respective classes.
The Mercedes-Benz S 400 HYBRID claimed the honours in the luxury class segment, buoyed by its combination of a six-cylinder petrol engine with a 20 horsepower electric motor, with the inclusion of an automatic start/stop function.
This tool, which involves the engine being turned off when a vehicle comes to halt before automatically coming back to life when a driver takes his foot off the brake pedal, is also a feature of the smart mhd, which triumphed in the convertible/roadster category.
According to the manufacturer, this system makes it possible for a motorist to make fuel savings of up to 20 per cent, particularly when the vehicle is being driven in city traffic.
Meanwhile, this system has no hindrance on the comfort and performance expected of the model.
